Both Squidoo and Hubpages are Web 2.0 platforms, and both of them are very similar in nature, but yet very different in their own ways.

For the benefit of those who do not know what they are, let me explain it in layman terms – Basically, both Squidoo and Hubpages are Web 2.0 platforms where you can sign up (for free) and start creating single page sites to share knowledge and information with the community.

Many people make use of these platforms to establish themselves as an “expert” in their areas of interest (yes, you got me right there, an “expert” – You do not need to be a know-all in your area of interest to be considered as an expert. Just share with the community what you know. Because there always is something that you know that others don’t).

I know you may be asking ”Between Squidoo and Hubpages, which one is better? Surely, there must be a winner!”.

What I’m going to do in this post is to compare both Squidoo and Hubpages side-by-side, so you will have a better knowledge about the differences between these 2 Web 2.0 platforms.

Let me first start with the terminologies that’s used by both Squidoo and Hubpages:

A single Squidoo site is called a “Lens” while a single Hubpages site is called a “Hub”.
An author of a Squidoo lens is called a “Lensmaster” while an author of a Hubpages hub is called an “Author”.
In Squidoo, each text/picture/links block is called a “Module”, while the equivalent in Hubpages is called a “Capsule”.
A guestbook in Squidoo is called a “Guestbook” while the equivalent in Hubpages is called a “Comment”.
Every Squidoo lens is ranked accordingly by their “Lensrank” (the best lens is rated 5 stars by the community) while a Hubpages hub is ranked accordingly by their “Hubscore” (out of 100).

Now that you have a better understanding of both Squidoo and Hubpages, let me now show you some of the notable differences between the two, starting with Squidoo:

Squidoo

You are allowed to create a maximum of 40 tags (where each tag consists of a keyword/key phrase) in a single lens.
For all ads/sales revenue earned by you through placing various product modules in your lenses, the revenue is shared between Squidoo and yourself based on PageRank.
You are allowed a maximum of 9 links back to 1 single domain name.
There is a forum available in Squidoo where you can participate in to get help on creating Squidoo lenses or to help others. This is not available in Hubpages.
There are more modules available in Squidoo compared to Hubpages (meaning, you can have more flexibility in creating a Squidoo lens as compared to creating a Hubpages hub).

HubPages

There are no tag limits – Meaning you can have as many tags as you wish in 1 single hub.
Unlike Squidoo, all ads/sales revenue earned through the various product modules available in HubPages goes directly to you – There’s an option available where you can enter your affiliate IDs, and all commissions made will go directly into your affiliate account that you have with the various merchants.
You are allowed a maximum of 2 links back to 1 single domain name.

Before you sign up as a member in Squidoo and Hubpages and start creating lenses and hubs, make sure you read carefully their Terms of Use so that you will not get into trouble with their administrators (which can result in your account being closed down without warning).

Squidoo vs Hubpage – The Winner Is…

Personally, I think there there is no clear winner between the two – Both are excellent Web 2.0 platforms. I’ve made use of both of them to generate a good profit for myself as well.

Since both Web 2.0 platforms are free to sign up, why not sign up as a member for both of them and get started on it?

As an newer user of Squidoo it occurred to me that there must be a million Squidoo lenses.

That’s what squids (Squidoo users) call a FREE domain and website at Squidoo.

Very impressive, really.

And these sites are touted as perfect for affiliate marketing, and I think they are.

As long as you pick the right offer and keywords.

Now that I think about that, it’s a little like that everywhere. There IS competition, after all.

So, just for sake of example lets say you have picked an affiliate offer from clickbank and it’s for FREE home electricity from solar panels called Solar Panels HQ. It’s purely for example but in case you don’t know this is a fairly hot topic and it will probably grow.

One of the most popular ways affiliate marketers get traffic to their offer sites is by article marketing with good, traffic producing content and the automatic SEO improvement by means of keyword text links in the authors resource box.

It’s just a GREAT two-for-one!

But there’s a catch to the great free site and domains you can get at Squidoo.

The catch (there’s always a “catch”) here is that Google will usually only show one Squidoo site in the top ten results. Sometimes, but rarely, two.

In order for Google to show YOUR Squidoo lens you’ll have to make your lens the best one in your group.

Think of it this way…Google will usually only pick ONE squidoo lens and ONE Ezinearticles and ONE video.

Having the product name in the title is one of the best things you can do so that Google will want to rank the site for “Solar panels.” Now, we can check out our competition! in other words find out who we are up against.

I ran this search in the Google search box. Type in… site: Squidoo.com “solar panels” and you’ll see approximately….  Results 1 – 10 of about 21,400 for site: Squidoo.com “Solar Panels”. (0.27 seconds) 

Gee. That’s a lot. 21,400 sites mention “solar panels.”

So how many Squidoo sites are actually targeting that phrase?

Type in allintitle: “solar panels” site:squidoo.com – Results 1 – 10 of about 466 from squidoo.com for allintitle:”Solar panels”. (0.17 seconds) 

Well. That’s less competition. but still quite a few.

Note: I picked one a few months back that came up with 775 in this search and I’m doing OK. But I would prefer LESS!

So I typed in “Home made solar panels” and got, with the allintitle search Results 1 – 1 of 1 from squidoo.com for allintitle:”Home Made Solar panels”. (0.16 seconds) 

DUDE!!! Only ONE COMPETITOR AT Squidoo for Home Made Solar Panels! Amazon has an affiliate program for solar panels! Some of you aspiring affiliate marketers might want to get going on this!

Checking further I went to Google keywords Tool (type google keyword tool into Google search) and got 2600 searches per month for “home made solar panels” and “home made solar panel.” You can’t get it much more targeted than that! The best key phrase would have to be “buy home made solar panels” which is a strong indicator of buying intention.

I checked the top ten Google serps for those terms and I found that the results were filled with PR3 and PR4 sites.

You can handle those guys! Competition? Nada! You would want to get a few links from .gov and .edu PR 5 and 6 sites and I think you’ll soar right past them with a well targeted Squidoo lens and find yourself with the Holy Grail of Internet marketing. And that would be FREE TARGETED TRAFFIC direct to your offer via Google and the other search engines.

Honestly it doesn’t get any better than that.

Squidoo royalties come from the Amazon, eBay or CafePress modules that run in your lens. You also earn a share of the Adsense revenues being placed on your lens.

The annual royalties received by Squidoo from the lenses in its portfolio are divided into three. 

Squidoo keeps 45% for expenses and other requirements of the website.

5% immediately goes to a charity.

The final 50% is for the lensmasters. The 50% share of the lensmaster may go to him or donated to his charity of choice.

 Almost 35% of lensmasters in Squidoo gives their share to their chosen charity. This is a clear indication that many lensmasters are publishing their articles not only for the money, but also for sharing their expertise and improving the lives of people from all over the world.

Recently Squidoo began banning many topics and content demonstrating an effort to censor free speech including commercial free speech. In an effort to reduce spam, Squidoo has adopted draconian policies that resulted in throwing the baby out with the bath water. It’s perplexing because one of Squidoo’s founders, Seth Godin, is a successful and respected Internet marketer.

Squidoo has locked up thousands of lenses on a variety of seemingly benign topics. Squidoo censors content with a “spam” filter they call the SquidDon’t filter.

Squidoo has adopted a heavy handed approach in dictating what can and cannot be written about on their site. It’s clearly censorship that marks the end of free speech on Squidoo. It’s even more troubling because Squidoo bans topics for its members while allowing these very same topics to be published on Squidoo but only through affiliate programs and agreements set up by Squidoo.

It is important to explore this hypocrisy. Through partnerships with Amazon, eBay and other companies, Squidoo allows any lensmaster to display items and topics that it prohibits members to publish directly. What has happened is Squidoo violates its own ever changing TOS when it suits Squidoo to do so.

For example, Squidoo has the temerity to imply most affiliate programs and other legitimate activities are anathema to them. The truth is Squidoo derives much of its income from affiliate programs.

Squidoo promotes affiliate programs with Amazon.com, eBay and other companies. Through Squidoo, Amazon hawks an almost unlimited number of X-rated books and movies and yes, Squidoo allows diet pills and weight loss paraphernalia, mass murderers’ memorabilia along with thousands of other items through eBay.

Through an arrangement with eBay Squidoo allows lensmasters to display and sell “memorabilia” from such stellar characters as Charles Manson, Jeffery Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy. However the censors at Squidoo will not allow its members to directly publish a lens on weight loss or how to play texas holdem poker.

Here are some examples of content Squidoo prevents its members from publishing on a lens: topics including affiliate marketing, weight loss, dieting, health products, card games, cash gifting, credit card debt, mortgages, currency trading, Forex, ringtones, adult lenses, lyrics and many more.

The hypocrisy is that all of these topics and subjects are found and allowed IF offered through one of the affiliate or referral arrangements set up to benefit Squidoo. These include Amazon, eBay, Google Adsense, Cafepress, Kontera and others.

While Squidoo derides you as a spammer, scammer and affiliate marketer, they are publishing and promoting the very same information and products through their own affiliate and referral  programs.

So while many marketers and bloggers will suggest ways to deal with a Squidoo lock, I will give you the best advice on how to react to Squidoo censorship. My advice is to abandon Squidoo forever. You don’t need Squidoo. Squidoo needs you.

You should not acquiesce to Squidoo’s censorship policy. There is no reason to jump through Squidoo’s hoops to comply with their free speech ban. If your lens has been locked by Squidoo, they have found you guilty and now demand you prove your innocence. After dealing with their censorship hurdles, they force YOU to write a letter explaining why your Squidoo lens should be unlocked.

I’m sensitive to those who have relied on Squidoo in their writing and marketing pursuits but I still feel there is no compelling reason to grovel under Squidoo’s dislike  for free speech. Why deal with such hypocrisy and grief? There are countless other vehicles where your content will be allowed.

In my opinion Squidoo has made a mistake in judgement by limiting free speech. I predict that Squidoo will eventually recognize their error when they realize writers, bloggers and marketers do not need Squidoo at all. Squidoo needs them. It might be too late though because so many good folks will have moved on to other arenas where free speech is welcomed, respected and available to all.
